Core Value: Advice with Guershom Sylvain

In April, Rush Soccer’s Core Value of the month is ADVICE. Rush Soccer describes ADVICE as, “Seek out advice and aspire to be the best.  In order to learn, we must be open to learning and consider the advice of others.”  We sat down with Guershom Sylvain, a recent starlight within Rush who recently received a full ride scholarship to Combine Academy after being identified at a recent Rush Select event. Some of our players across Rush nation wanted to get some ADVICE from a player like Guershom, so they sent in some questions for him to answer!

Q: When did you know that soccer was your passion?

Guershom: I knew soccer was my passion was when I moved to the US and I started playing for little local Club in Lansing. I was in Sam's Club with my mom and this guy came up to me and was like ‘Hey, do you play soccer?’ and I was like, ‘Yes I do.’ And he invited me to play for a team. When I went to practice, I had never seen any of the drills they were doing, but everything started clicking when I tried them. I was having a good time and was really happy with the new environment. And I knew I really wanted to keep doing this.

Q: How old were you when you started playing soccer?

Guershom: I first started playing was back in Africa when I was about 4. I know my dad used to play for a local team and I watched his games as early as 2 years old. So, I was young when I was introduced to the game.

Q: How often you train a week?

Guershom: I don't really have a set like number that I keep track of. I train with my club team on Tuesdays and Thursdays and I'm on my own one day of the week, usually on Mondays, where I at least I try to go in the backyard and I'll work on just kicking the ball and pass it to myself passing off a wall. And If I can, I work on dribbling and add in fitness. So, probably four times a week and the other days I’m either resting or at the gym.

Q: How far do you want to take your career?

Guershom: The sky's limit. I'd like to take it as far as I can. I would definitely like to play in Europe. That's a big goal of mine. The U.S. is very good too. But Europe is something big and something very exceptional.

Q: If you could play professionally for any club in the world, which one would it be?

Ghersom: If we’re talking 2013-14, I think I would I think I'd prefer to play for Real Madrid. I was a big Ronaldo fan. I would really like to play with him. I feel like he's very passionate and has a really strong drive. He demands a lot from people, so I feel like playing with him would take my game to the next level. But if you’re talking about today where I’d like to be for the location or for the the history, I think I would like to play for Chelsea. I'm a big Chelsea fan right now.

I think I've just been drawn to play for that club. And … I think (Christian Pulisic) is very underrated. I know some people talk him down, but I'm like, ‘Are you watching the guy? Do you see what he's doing?’ I think he's very I think he's very good at keeping the ball close to himself when he dribbles and he can turn very well. People don't notice always notice how well he turns with the ball.
